Why Zanskar Valley?

Most people who plan a Ladakh trip never make it to Zanskar. Not because it's hidden, but because reaching it used to mean days on a road that barely existed, so it stayed exactly as it's always been while Leh, Nubra, and Pangong slowly filled up with tour buses.

Zanskar sits in the Kargil district of Ladakh, a high altitude cold desert valley ranging from roughly 3,500 to over 7,000 metres. It opened to general tourism only in the mid 1990s, and even now, this remains one of the least visited corners of a region most people already consider remote. Padum, the valley's main town and the closest thing it has to a hub, sits at approximately 3,650 metres, small enough that most of it can genuinely be walked across in ten minutes.

What you find here is a monastery built into the mouth of a cave, Phugtal Gompa, which monks and wandering scholars are reported to have used for meditation for roughly 2,500 years, though the monastery structure itself was formally founded much later, in the early 15th century, by Jangsem Sherap Zangpo. A rock formation called Gonbo Rangjon, standing completely alone against the sky, considered sacred by locals not because anyone carved it that way, but simply because it is. A river, the Zanskar, that freezes solid enough in winter for people to walk across it for days at a time, on what's now known worldwide as the Chadar Trek.

Getting there today usually means crossing Shinkula Pass, connecting Lahaul in Himachal Pradesh to Zanskar at somewhere between roughly 16,580 and 16,703 feet depending on the source, on a road completed only around 2022 that opened direct access from Manali for the first time. Before that, and still as an alternative route today, Zanskar was reached mainly via Kargil, a longer approach over Pensi La Pass. Either way in, you're entering territory that Buddhist royal families ruled as an independent kingdom for centuries before it was ever absorbed into Ladakh.

What network coverage should I expect in Zanskar?
Coverage is genuinely minimal. Jio and Airtel have limited presence in Padum specifically, but signal drops out for long stretches of the route, including around Shinkula Pass and Purne. Plan to be offline for most of the trip rather than treating this as occasional coverage.

Do I need cash in Zanskar, and will UPI work?
Yes, carry cash. A rough guide is Rs 3,000 to 5,000 per person for the trip, since with network this unreliable, UPI and card payments often simply won't go through once you're past Manali or Kargil.

When exactly does the road into Zanskar open and close each year?
The road generally operates from mid May to early October, though this shifts year to year based on snowfall, and closures can happen with little warning even within that window. Check current status against an official source like the Himachal Pradesh government's Lahaul Spiti portal rather than a fixed calendar date, since third party blogs often quote outdated windows.

Is basic fitness enough, or do I need trekking experience?
Basic fitness is sufficient for this trip. There's no technical trekking involved, though the hike to Phugtal Monastery is a genuine, manageable walk rather than a stroll, and long driving days at altitude are more physically demanding than most people expect going in.

Is Zanskar the same trip as the Chadar Trek?
No. The Chadar Trek is a separate, foot based winter expedition across the frozen Zanskar River, entirely different from the road based Zanskar Valley Expedition covered here, which runs in the May to October window instead.
