The Meghalaya Kaziranga Expedition by The Travel Story is a 6 night, 7 day group trip from Guwahati to Guwahati. You walk 3,500 steps to the double decker root bridge, boat on the clear Umngot river, swim at Phe Phe Falls, and finish with a morning jeep safari at Kaziranga, home to more than two thirds of the world’s one horned rhinos. A trip captain stays with the group for all 7 days.

Itinerary
Land at Guwahati airport before 12 noon and leave at 12:30 PM. Stop at Umiam Lake. Spend the evening at Police Bazaar. Stay in Shillong.
Visit Elephant Falls, Dympep Valley and the Garden of Caves, and see Nohkalikai Falls (340 m) at dusk. Stay in Cherrapunji.
Start at Tyrna village and walk about 3,500 steps to Nongriat and the double decker root bridge. Also see Rainbow Falls and Seven Sister Falls. Stay in Cherrapunji.
Visit Arwah Caves, the India Bangladesh border viewpoint and Mawlynnong. Stay at Shnongpdeng, beside the Umngot river.
Take the 30 minute shared boat ride on the Umngot, with 4 people per boat. Swim at Phe Phe Falls and drive to Shillong. Stay in Shillong.
Drive through the Assam plains to Kaziranga. Check in to your hotel and rest before the safari. Stay in Kaziranga.
Start with an early morning jeep safari. Then drive to Guwahati. Book your onward flight for 6 PM or later

Can you cover Meghalaya and Kaziranga in 7 days?
Yes. This itinerary does exactly that, with about 1,000 km of road travel over 7 days. It keeps the main Meghalaya circuit and adds one Kaziranga jeep safari. If you have only 5 or 6 days, take the Meghalaya Backpacking trip.
What does it cost, and how do I pay?
Prices are ₹23,499 on triple sharing and ₹25,499 on double sharing, plus 5% GST per person. Reserve your seat with ₹5,000. Pay 50% of the balance 15 days before departure and the rest 7 days before. Budget extra for lunches, camera fees, tips and personal spends. Flights are not included.
What is included in the Kaziranga jeep safari?
The jeep safari is part of the package. It covers more ground than an elephant safari. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but Kaziranga has the highest density of one horned rhinos in the world. Carry the same government photo ID you used at booking.
When is Kaziranga open?
Kaziranga closes for the monsoon floods, roughly from mid May to September, and reopens around 1 October. Not every zone and safari type opens on the same day. November to March is the best window for both the park and Meghalaya.
Best time for Meghalaya and Kaziranga together
- October: Greener Meghalaya, and Kaziranga reopening.
- November to February: The best window. Dry weather, the clearest Umngot river and the full park open. Nights in Shillong can fall to around 4 °C.
- March to April: Warmer, with a few showers. April is the last month before the monsoon closure.
- May to September: Kaziranga is closed and Meghalaya is in monsoon, so we do not run this trip then.

Fly into Guwahati airport (GAU). Approximate flight times:
- Delhi: about 2.5 hours
- Kolkata: about 1.25 hours
- Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad: about 3 to 3.5 hours
Land before 12 noon on Day 1.
Stays and rooming
- 2 nights in Shillong, 2 in Cherrapunji, 1 at Shnongpdeng and 1 in Kaziranga.
- Solo travellers share a room with someone of the same gender. Rooms are on triple or double sharing.
- An experienced trip captain stays with the group. A medical kit travels with the group.
How hard is the Nongriat root bridge trek?
It is moderate. You walk about 3,500 steps down and the same back up, 6 km in total, in 4 to 6 hours. Wear shoes with good grip. Signal weakens near Nongriat.
What do the Dawki activities include?
The package includes 30 minutes of shared boating on the Umngot river.
Safety
You travel with a trip captain, a driver and a group, and a medical kit is on the trip. Keep your hands inside the jeep and follow your guide’s instructions in the park. Do not leave marked trails.
Permits and ID
Carry a government photo ID for hotels and the Kaziranga safari.
Network
Airtel work in Shillong and Cherrapunji. Signal is weak at the root bridge trek and in Kaziranga.

No Refund shall be made with respect to the initial booking amount for any cancellations. However,
- If cancellations are made 30 days before the start date of the trip, 50% of the trip cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
- If cancellations are made 15-30 days before the start date of the trip, 75% of the trip cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
- If cancellations are made within 0-15 days before the start date of the trip, 100% of the trip cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
- In the case of unforeseen weather conditions or government restrictions, certain activities may be cancelled and in such cases, the operator will try his best to provide an alternate feasible activity. However, no refund will be provided for the same.
