Reaching the starting point

Reach the boarding point in Delhi, Kashmere Gate or R K Ashram, by 6:30 PM on Day 0,  This gives you a comfortable buffer if traffic runs long, and the overnight Volvo won't wait past its scheduled time.

Getting home after New Year

Book any onward flight or train from Delhi for after 10 AM on the day you're dropped back. The Shimla to Delhi Volvo runs overnight, and while it's generally on time, mountain roads and early January traffic on the Kalka side can occasionally add an hour, so give yourself that margin rather than cutting it close.

How cold Kalpa and Kaza actually get on New Year's Eve

Late December is deep winter in this part of Himachal. Expect nights well below minus fifteen degrees Celsius in both Kaza and Kalpa, and it isn't unusual for temperatures to drop further on a genuinely clear night, which, conveniently, is also the kind of night that makes for the best stargazing of the entire trip. Homestays and hotels along the route run on wood stoves and room heaters rather than central heating, so what you're wearing matters more than how many blankets are on the bed.

Why this route goes via Shimla and not Manali

Spiti has no airport and no railway station of its own. In summer, most trips reach it either via Shimla through the Kinnaur valley or via Manali through the Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass. By December, the Manali side is closed under snow, which is exactly why every winter departure, this one included, runs entirely through Shimla and Kinnaur instead. It's a longer road, but it's also the only one open, and it takes you through Chitkul, Nako, and Tabo, places the Manali route skips entirely.

Altitude through the trip

You'll be spending real time above 3,500 metres, Kaza sits at roughly 3,650 metres, and Kibber and Komic push higher still. None of this requires prior high altitude experience, but it does mean the cold and the thin air both hit harder than the number on a thermometer suggests. An oxygen cylinder travels with the vehicle for the whole trip as a precaution, not because it's routinely needed, but because at this altitude, in this cold, it's the kind of thing you want along regardless.

Network and connectivity

Coverage thins out considerably past Rampur and disappears almost entirely through stretches of Kinnaur and inside Spiti itself. Jio and BSNL have limited presence in Kaza, but don't plan on posting your New Year's countdown live. Tell people at home you'll be reachable in patches, not on schedule.

What to actually pack for a winter Spiti New Year

A proper down jacket, thermal base layers worn under your regular clothes rather than saved for the coldest moment, waterproof and insulated shoes, gloves, a warm cap, and a headtorch for homestay nights when the power occasionally dips. Carry cash. ATMs in Kaza are unreliable in winter, and a card won't help you at a roadside dhaba in Kinnaur. A power bank is worth its weight too, charging points aren't guaranteed everywhere you stay.

Who this trip is actually for

Ages 18 to 35, travelling solo or in a group. A meaningful share of every batch is solo travellers, and by the time the Kalpa bonfire happens on Day 7, most people aren't counting down the new year with strangers anymore, they're doing it with people they met six days earlier and are already exchanging numbers with.
