Spiti Biking Expedition with The Travel Story covers four high passes — including two that most Indian riders have never heard of, because until recently, they weren't allowed to ride them. Shipki La at 3,930 metres is an ancient Indo-Tibet trade route sitting on the India-China border in Kinnaur. For centuries, traders and monks crossed it before it was shut to civilians. It recently reopened for tourists and we are among the first ones to put it on a fixed departure biking itinerary. Lepcha La at 3,920 metres, accessed from Nako on the way to Tabo, is equally new to the touring circuit. Very few bikers have stood on either pass. On this trip, you cross both. The full route runs 887 kilometres over 7 days — from Manali through the Jalori Pass into Kinnaur, past Chitkul, through Shipki La and Khab Sangam, over Lepcha La, through Tabo Monastery and Dhankar, into Kaza, up to Hikkim's world-highest post office at 4,440 metres and Komic at 4,587 metres, across Asia's highest suspension bridge at Chicham, over Kunzum Pass at 4,550 metres, and finally to Chandrataal Lake at 4,300 metres for an overnight camp. Only twelve bikes per batch for a solid experience. Bikes with fuel included. Mechanical backup on every kilometre. Report at Kashmere Gate or R.K. Ashram by 6 PM on Saturday. Board the overnight semi-sleeper Volvo to Manali. This is where the group meets for the first time. Arrive Manali on Sunday morning.
Arrive Manali, check in, get bikes assigned and geared up. First ride of the trip — 110 km via the Aut Tunnel along the Beas River, dropping down into the Tirthan Valley. Stop at Jibhi Waterfall on the way in. Today is the warm-up — green hills, smooth roads, and the kind of riding that gets you comfortable on the bike before the altitude starts climbing. Dinner and overnight stay in Jibhi.

The longest ride of the trip and the first serious one. Jalori Pass at 3,200 metres is the gateway between the Kullu Valley and the Sutlej Valley — a narrow, switchback climb that rewards you with views across both sides at the top. From the pass you descend into Kinnaur, riding along the Sutlej River through one of Himachal's most dramatic gorges before stopping at the Rock Tunnel, locally called Kinnaur Gate — a section of road literally blasted through sheer cliff face. Reach Sangla in the Baspa Valley by evening. 190 km and 8 hours but the road makes you forget to count.

Two stops that most bikers have never reached. Morning ride to Chitkul — the last inhabited village before the Tibet border in Himachal Pradesh at 3,450 metres. From there the route descends to Khab Sangam, the confluence of the Spiti and Sutlej rivers — two mountain rivers meeting at a single dramatic point below towering cliffs.
Then comes the ride that separates this itinerary from every other Spiti biking trip in the market.
Shipki La sits at 3,930 metres on the India-China border. This ancient mountain pass was for centuries the primary trade route between India and Tibet — merchants, monks, and armies crossed it for generations before it was closed to civilians. It has recently reopened for tourists and very few Indian bikers have ridden it. The road to the pass is rough and the view at the top looks directly into Tibet. You will not forget standing there.
From Shipki La, ride to Nako at 3,662 metres — a village built around a high-altitude lake with a 10th-century monastery.

The second recently opened pass. Lepcha La at 3,920 metres is accessed from Nako before dropping into the Spiti Valley proper. The road is newly accessible to tourists and sits above the treeline with unobstructed views across the Kinnaur-Spiti border region. Most touring bikers doing Spiti have never crossed it — you will be among the first to do so.
After Lepcha La, visit Tabo Monastery which is founded in 996 AD and called the Ajanta of the Himalayas for its ancient cave murals. Then Dhankar, a monastery perched on a cliff at 3,890 metres that looks structurally impossible. Arrive in Kaza, the headquarters of Spiti Valley, at 3,800 metres.

Today we will visit Key Monastery at 4,166 metres has been continuously occupied since the 11th century — arrive early before any other visitors and you'll have the monks and the mountain views almost entirely to yourself. Later visit Hikkim at 4,440 metres is home to the world's highest post office — post a letter home.
Komic Village at 4,587 metres is the world's highest motorable village . Langza at 4,400 metres is where marine fossils sit in the rock from when this entire valley was a prehistoric sea floor.

Early checkout from Kaza and reach Chicham Bridge — Asia's highest suspension bridge at approximately 4,200 metres — crosses a 150-metre deep gorge of the Spiti River. Take a halt at Losar, the last village before Kunzum Pass.
Visit Kunzum Pass at 4,550 metres is the boundary between Spiti and Lahaul.
Lastly, reach Chandrataal Lake at 4,300 metres. Named for its crescent moon shape. Camp overnight. The stars from 4,300 metres with zero light pollution are the reason people keep talking about this night.

Checkout early and leave for Manali. Drive back through Batal and Koksar, through the Atal Tunnel. Board the overnight Volvo from Manali back to Delhi. Arrive Delhi on Sunday.

No Refund shall be made with respect to the initial booking amount for any cancellations. However,
- If cancellations are made 30 days before the start date of the trip, 50% of the trip cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
- If cancellations are made 15-30 days before the start date of the trip, 75% of the trip cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
- If cancellations are made within 0-15 days before the start date of the trip, 100% of the trip cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
- In the case of unforeseen weather conditions or government restrictions, certain activities may be cancelled and in such cases, the operator will try his best to provide an alternate feasible activity. However, no refund will be provided for the same.
